Social media and the future of PR

Call for Papers!

Social media and the future of PR:

New ideas, new research, new business

EUPRERA EuroBlog 2008 Spring Symposium     Brussels, March 13-15, 2008

The EuroBlog surveys of 2006 and 2007 highlighted the ways in which interactive social media technologies – weblogs, podcasts, wikis, social networking and other social softwares and services - were beginning to impact on communication. The Brussels Symposium (March 13-15, 200 8) brings together the latest academic thought with leading edge practice from Europe, the USA and elsewhere to draw new theoretical insights and encourage and shape practitioner innovation and implementation. By identifying and presenting examples of best practice, empirical investigation and new concepts for modelling and understanding the rapid changes in relationship management, EuroBlog 2008 will shape the agenda for social media discussion.

Papers are invited which address these questions:

• How can academic research lead and support the ways in which practitioners embrace social media?

• How should academics approach teaching social media (both in terms of course content and pedagogy)?

• What are the societal implications of social media (democracy, accountability, privacy)?

Participants

Researchers from all over Europe and beyond, including many involved in the EUPRERA network of academics from more than 30 countries. – Public Relations executives from major companies, institutions, and specialists in online initiatives, interactive media, digital communication and issues monitoring.

From Thursday to Sunday there was the European Public Researchers and Teachers Confernece in Roskilde, Denmark.
Confernece topic was “Legitimacy in a Changing World”. Maybe now you would want to ask, how such topic is connected toPublic Relations?
I think, overall, the perspective of confernece is explaning this question. The topic, Organisation and Society – Legitimacy in a changing world, is today quite an actual theme in different PR practices over the world. During the second half of the 20th century, the premises of institutions have lost their taken for granted character. The balances between market mechanisms, civil society and political regulations at national and international levels have undergone important changes in different parts of the world. These balances influence the legitimacy of organisational activities and communication, and we can see new forms of international as well as national social mechanisms of legitimisation. Analyses show how the laws of the welfare state are becoming increasingly overburdened and inadequate when it comes to responding flexibly to the complexity of social processes, also where national legislation in the wake of globalization is concerned.

To support education and research in public relations, papers dealed with the following key issues:
-How do we conceive and identify these changing balances in society?
-How do we understand the implications of such changes for organisational responsibility and legitimacy?
-How do we understand the implications of these changes for organisational communication and public relations?
-How can we understand the implications of different forms of political regulation, legislation and legitimacy for public relations functions?
-Can we identify new demands for research and education as the basis for professional organisational communication and public relations?
Full academical papers are available also on the Internet, you can read them here. Username and password is needed.
From practical side Arla Company also analysed their crisis communication in moslem countries after the Muhhamed ironic caroons were published in Denmark newspaper 2 years ago.

Also one interesting presentation about trends in PR was held at this conference, and you can read full survey here.

Denmark itself was fun. As the confernce days were very busy, I did not have many possibilities to enjoy the city and the country. But one lovely photo is here: Few steps from the Confernece hotel in Roskilde, Denmark - Roskilde is lovely living environment for people, cows and swans…
